About Mia

“Mia’s work is profound. She is a reiki master, but also a master of the maps of unconscious realms.”

— Wendy Tucker, The Shulgin Foundation, Transform Press

I have been a certified Reiki Master/Teacher in the Usui system of natural healing for over 35 years.

This profound work contains and informs everything I do. I have thousands of hours of study in bodywork and somatic inquiry, have completed a comprehensive training in the Hakomi method of body-centered psychotherapy, have engaged in healing ceremony in the U.S. and Mexico, and have been dancing since the age of five.

Reiki is a practice rooted in Buddhism, and for over ten years I have been studying Vajrayana Buddhism in both the Kagyu and the Shangpa lineages with Lama Palden Drolma, Senior Lama of the Sukhasiddhi Foundation, as well as other teachers of Tibetan Buddhism. This has truly helped me refine my understanding and practice of reiki, clearing up some of the inaccuracies and misconceptions that attended reiki in its early years in the west. I am deeply grateful to all my teachers for their ongoing help and support in the bottomless pursuit of awakening.

Guided by the principle that at the deepest level of our being is a limitless pool of wellness, my work is a dialogue with the senses. Our bodies are the user’s manual we came with, an interactive map of the unconscious, and the home of our truth. With an evolving toolbox and a spiritual practice that spans many decades, my work is a means to connect with the ground of our being and emerge free from the labyrinth of old stories, beliefs, karmic traces, and ancestral burdens.

I have been teaching and seeing clients in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 35 years.

Hear some of my thoughts on love in relationship to reiki in this interview.

“Mia’s distance healing work is so powerful, it is palpable in the room. The energy sent feels like a soft zen-infused waterfall! While I have practiced distance healing with others in the past, I always refer clients’ requests to Mia. Quite simply, she is the best!“

—Jennifer Brinn, Reiki Master/Teacher

I have experienced tremendous growth in working with Mia. The work has involved energy healing with reiki as well as deep body-centered counseling whereby she assists me in identifying and better understanding the internal structures within myself. Mia’s style is always gentle, supportive, and grounding. She offers profoundly insightful feedback and helpful tools. I really cannot easily put into words the influence this work has had on my life.”

“Mia brings an extraordinary combination of healing touch, intuition, and intelligence to her work. Her touch and her vision help me see and feel myself in the ways that are most healing for me. Mia helps me to unveil/reveal things about myself so I can see my way to the healing I deeply want.”

“The way I would describe Mia’s teaching style would be gentle, powerful, poetic, and hands off. She’s a wonderful guide who doesn’t simply teach, but provides a safe space for the student to learn and expand organically in their own gifts. I am still digesting the beautiful downloads I have received from her training. So many things have shifted in my life, and I’m grateful to reiki and Mia. I recommend her empowering, expansive, and opening nine-month master/teacher training — the length was one of the best parts, it gave us time to truly connect with the work, and receive guidance along the way, for a really transformative nine months. None of us were the same by the end.”

“For close to six years, I've had the good fortune to work with Mia in a process of healing. In that time, she has been an incredibly intuitive (and occasionally irreverent) guide and witness to my internal unfolding. Her greatest tools are her deep and communicable trust in the workings of your body and the universe, her gift of allowing you to determine both the pace and the focus of each meeting's work, her humor, and her rich grounded presence. Her work is a collaborative process between three main players- Mia, yourself, and the world- and I am continually awed by the gratitude that I feel towards all three. My body has gone from feeling like a separate, confusing, chaotic, and often uninhabited structure to my deepest resource; one filled with all of the images, animals, spirits, and sensations that I have tracked in her presence, as well as enough mystery, wisdom, and beauty to last a lifetime.”

“For the first time in my life I felt an inner peace that people usually only read about in books. I became so moved by this that I wanted to learn reiki from Mia. The most important lesson Mia has taught me as a teacher is to let go and trust the reiki energy to do the healing work. I now have a thriving reiki practice of my own in San Francisco and Mia’s words of wisdom are with me in every healing session that I do: ‘Let go and trust the reiki energy and the healing will happen.’ And it always does! Thank you, Mia, you have forever changed my life!”

“Working with Mia Runanin has been one of the most meaningful relationships of my adult life. There is a steadiness to her presence that makes it feel safe to grow, even when the work is hard. I’ve been in weekly counseling with her for years now, and because of how much I get from those sessions, I usually sign up for any class she offers. I’ve studied reiki with her for four years, and I’m currently taking her dreamwork class, which has been incredible. In all Mia's classes and 1:1 sessions, the environment she creates is loving, attuned, and expansive.

Mia possesses an intelligence that is not merely analytic, but integrative — she is able to draw unexpected, surprising connections for me and reveal the larger pattern at work. In one somatic session, she might bring in Buddhist philosophy, a line of poetry, something from depth psychology, and somehow even a reference to a superhero movie — and it all makes sense. The connections never feel random. They land exactly where I need them to. She has a way of listening for the thread in what I’m saying and gently helping me see the bigger pattern underneath it, all with deep intelligence, warmth and loving kindness. I never feel judged or rushed by Mia. I feel understood. In Mia's space, I can be messy, uncertain, and real.

She is also funny as hell.

The impact she’s had on my life is real. Some of my oldest patterns have softened. Relationships that used to feel impossible feel more workable now — not because the other people changed, but because I did. I don’t get swallowed up by difficult emotions the way I used to. I have more room inside myself.

To work with Mia is to be invited into a deeper participation with your own life. I can say without exaggeration that she has transformed mine and I am deeply grateful for the ways she’s helped me do that.”
